An Alice in Wonderland Tea Party Sussex Pub Wedding ~ Keith & Johanna

We have a wedding full of wows for you today! There’s homemade book bouquets, a doggy ring bearer and one truly amazing Choccywoccydoodah cake – oh and Keith and Johanna’s cool theme centred around Alice in Wonderland too!

But, enough from us (we know you’re chomping at the bit to see it!), here’s beautiful bride and Love Sussex Wedding reader, Johanna to take us down the rabbit hole and reminisce about her dreamy day at The Bell Inn, Ticehurst:

The proposal

We live so close to the sea (you can see it from our front door) so Keith used the beach for his proposal. He got up early when the tide was out under the pretence of our dog, Lizzie, needing a walk He then wrote ‘marry me’ on the sand. He raced back to the house and told me he’d found something on the beach and I had got to come see. When I got down to the beach I saw what he had written and he dropped to one knee and proposed!

We chose to get married in Sussex because it’s home! I was born in Eastbourne and Keith moved from Croydon to Pevensey when he was three.

Through the looking glass…

Our wedding theme was inspired by Alice in Wonderland (vintage Tenniel Alice not Disney!) and we found most of our inspiration on Pinterest.

My mum made my bouquet out of the pages of an illustrated Alice in Wonderland, the copy of which was first printed in 1981 (when Keith was born) then reprinted in 1983 (when I was born) so was perfect!

THAT cake…

We went for a design that was completely different but contained what was important to us; the stag (as we are Harts), the bell round his neck (as we were at The Bell) the love birds (us) and roses painted red (to go with our Alice theme)!

Pretty Personal Touches

I designed and made our save the dates, invitations, place cards and table plan. They were all Alice in Wonderland themed.

We also had our dog, Lizzie, as our ring bearer!

My top tips for other Sussex brides to be are…

Just to enjoy every minute, the day goes by so quickly. Also, plan something to look forward to after the wedding because after all the planning and excitement you can feel a little lost when you no longer have the wedding in your life.

We loved wedding planning!

We did it all together and chose everything together. There is not a single thing we would change about our day!

Honeymoon hotspot: Mexico Riveria Maya

Dress: Knights Bridal | Shoes: Le Soulier | Bridesmaids: Ted Baker

Flowergirl: Monsoon | Groom: John Lewis, Reiss & Cheaney

See what we mean about all the wows! Keith and Johanna had such a wonderful wedding! We loved their quirky, vintage style and funky theme. Their venue stylist, Victoria, clearly worked closely with our lovely couple to make sure the thoughts in their minds became reality!

It was fab to hear that our newlyweds (who only tied the knot in May, this year) loved the entire planning process and did it totally together, something we know so many of you are doing too.

Thank you so much Clare from Fitzgerald Photographic for sharing these gorgeous wedding photos with us and of course massive Love Sussex Weddings love goes to Johanna for chatting to us, so soon after her bloomin’ lovely big day!
