A Nautical Inspired Chichester Wedding at Southend Barns ~ Emily & Dan

Sussex Barn Wedding

Happy new year! Congrats if you are newly engaged and welcome back if you have been reading Love Sussex Weddings and planning your wedding for a while now. We have an exciting year planned for 2014 and are starting as we mean to go on with a drop dead gorgeous Sussex wedding of course. . .

When Southampton-based couple Dan and Emily saw Chichester’s Southend Barns, they fell in love all over again and decided to hop across the county border for a nautical inspired Sussex wedding.

This week, we’re doing something a little bit different as we’ve got gorgeous groom Dan’s take on his big day. So enough from us and over to Dan for all the goss:

“Mine and Emily’s journey together started at the age of 11 where we were both went to the same school, we were friends during this time but our relationship unfortunately never blossomed into anything more (Emily was too cool for me!) and so at 16 went our separate ways. However 19 years later we both were reunited at a mutual friends wedding and hit it off!! This was just over two years ago and I’m pleased to say a year later I proposed on a beach in San Diego!

We fell in love with the venue at Southend Barns and knew it would work for us. It also meant it wasn’t too far for our guests to travel from nearby Southampton.

Choosing the venue was one of the most enjoyable things about planning our wedding, we knew it was just what we wanted as soon as we walked in. Mariella and William from Southend Barns made everything so easy and possible, it felt totally stress-free.

We spent many hours looking online under nautical wedding searches that helped us get ideas in what we wanted. We chose blues, whites with a hint of pink to continue the theme.

Our wedding day was very special as not only do we share many of the same mutual friends from school but both our best friends from school were the maid of honour and best man!

All Hands On Deck

We luckily had a very creative mother in law on board, (pardon the pun!) she helped massively with the more creative side of things.

The bridesmaid dresses were made by a very talented friend’s mother. She did a fantastic job especially as she needed to make dresses for one bridesmaid who had recently had a baby and another who was pregnant. The girls loved wearing them and they were perfect!

My top tip for other Sussex brides to-be and grooms-to be is…

Always stick with your original thoughts. It can be overwhelming when looking through magazines or trawling online. Although they are a massive help as they offer inspiration and little ideas you’d never thought of, just try and keep that original picture in your head of how you thought your day would look/feel.

My least favourite part of wedding planning was…

Choosing the menu. The food that our caterers provided was out of this world. But trying to choose what you thought your guests would like the most was tricky. Never the less it did mean we got to sample the food twice…. So not all bad!

If we could do it all again we would…?

Change nothing, not even the power cut which meant the speeches were delayed and the cake was cut outside and the best man also gave an alfresco speech. Our guests seemed to enjoy this impromptu and unforeseen aspect of the day!”

Ahoy there! Well it’s fair to say we loved Dan and Emily’s nautical touches to their summer barn wedding, from the quirky table plan, to the anchor decorated cupcakes, the couple’s subtle theme worked gorgeously with their venue.

Emily looked absolutely radiant in her long lace gown, complete with natural make-up and plaited up-do, and so did her bridesmaids – the couple’s friends from school – in their beautiful homemade sea blue dresses.

A huge thank you to the happy couple for sharing their big day with us and of course to their photographer Graham Nixon who took these lovely photographs.
