This week we’re heading back to sunny June for Brighton newlyweds Jo and Ewan’s Sussex wedding. Starting proceedings with a gorgeous ceremony at Bishop Hannington Church in Hove and then heading off in a VW Campervan to Pyecombe’s Pangdean Barn, via the picturesque South Down’s for stunning snaps, this is one summer wedding to longingly lust over. But, enough from us, here’s bride Jo to tell us more:
“Both of us were born and grew up in Brighton and Hove, so getting married here was really the only option for us, we love it!
I found most of my suppliers through word of mouth recommendations and lots of online researching. I had all the inspiration in my head and wanted our wedding to be romantic, simple, real and completely us.
Our ceremony was the most important part of our day, our wonderful Vicar Julian Milson prepared us for the day, spoke so honestly and the beautiful church was light, bright and filled with joy and music. I walked down the aisle to Bob Marley‘s ‘One Love’ and we had lots of extra friends and family to the church rather than the evening in order that everyone who wanted to could come and see us get married was able to.
I completely designed and made all the save the dates and invitations, designing and making ink stamps and sewing each with material and buttons to give our day a homemade feel. We also made sixty wooden candle stumps to adorn every table. I’d say, do it yourself it is so much more fun and produces something which is completely unique and completely you.
Our table plan was based on countries we have travelled to together and we covered blocks of wood as table numbers. We also foraged our local woods for delicious fruit in order to make Hedgerow Gin, bottling it into old recycled miniature whisky bottles which we had collected from antique shops – each had an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ style label on. Ewan designed the menu which was impeccably recreated by the staff at Pangdean. My father selected and supplied the wines to compliment the food.
Our wedding cake was stacked rounds of cheese and we had no cutting of the cake or throwing the bouquet or lengthy formal photos. We wanted nothing to distract us from just enjoying the day. Some of our guests even camped in the grounds of Pangdean (they loved it!)
My top tips for Sussex brides are:
Let the surroundings do the talking in photos, our un-posed photos were our favourites. Keep in mind what you want and don’t let anyone persuade you otherwise, the people that snigger at you when you ask for what you want are not capable of making your vision a reality. Choose the people that get excited when you talk through your ideas as these are the ones who can make it happen!
If we could do it all again we would…?
Do everything the same, just worry a little less!
