After nearly ten years of togetherness Hove-based Lucy and Richard held their sumptuous wedding reception at Wiston House in Steyning and tied the knot at The Church of the Sacred Heart, Hove in August 2012.
The beautiful bride today, Lucy, is also a Love Sussex Weddings reader so it’s extra lovely to hear about her day. Over to the lovely Lucy for more about this gorgeous summer-time wedding:
“We met in 2001 on our first day of university in Sheffield as we were housemates. We actually got together within the first month! Richard finally proposed whilst we were staying in Padstow in 2010. It took us another two years to finally plan and organise the wedding so we didn’t do things quickly!
We decided to get married in Sussex as we love it here! I grew up in Hove and three years ago we both moved back here. We also have lots of family and friends nearby so a Sussex venue was an easy decision.
We got ideas for the wedding from looking at blogs, including Love Sussex Weddings, and trawling through wedding magazines for inspiration!
We also attended some wedding fayres which I found quite stressful! They were always jam packed with people and I found them quite overwhelming as there was so many options and choices!
Our Wedding Finds
Sara was so lovely throughout the planning process and on the day helped put everyone at ease. We are really happy with the photos, they’re perfect!
We Fell In Love With Our Venue
Our favourite thing about planning the wedding had to be visiting the various wedding venues! It was really exciting, especially when we found Wiston House. We completely fell in love with the house and grounds and enjoyed all our pre-wedding visits as they really built the anticipation before the big day.
We spent most of our budget on the reception venue but we feel it was worth every penny. The staff were professional and organised but also friendly and accommodating and the house and grounds were stunningly beautiful.
Pretty Personal Touches
Our inspiration came from some of the things we both love such as travel. The tables were named after places that are special to us and the table plan was presented on a vintage map that is supposed to be giftwrap! We wrote the guest names using a typewriter font onto luggage labels.
Instead of a guestbook we also designed postcards for the guests to fill out that featured pictures from our travels to continue the theme.
After filling in the postcards the guest left them in an old suitcase that had sentimental value as it was owned by the groom’s grandfather.
Another one of our shared loves is food and cooking so we decided to make our own jam as a wedding favour (with help from my lovely mother in law Pam!).
My Top Tip
To try to do things in plenty of time and not leave anything to the last minute as you want the days before the wedding to be as stress free as possible!
If We Could Do It All Again, We Would…
Do it exactly the same but maybe get a band as well as a DJ to add to the evening entertainment. Also leave less to the day before as this added to the pre-wedding nerves!”

It’s always special when our readers share their wedding day experiences, and we absolutely love this wedding. A huge thank you to Lucy and Richard, and also super-snapper Sara Reeve for sharing this beautiful day with us!
Such a stunning Sussex venue and the personal touches of the homemade jam and the travel themed table-plan made from wrapping paper were right up our street. We love Lucy’s lace dress and those sage green bridesmaid dresses are just gorgeous too.
You can’t beat bit of country manor glamour and we love the elegant yet relaxed feel to Lucy and Richard’s beautiful big day!
