A Pelham House, Lewes Wedding With A Tea For Two Marquee Reception (Part One)

All photos in this post by Brighton Photo

Today we head over to lovely Lewes for a pretty Pelham House wedding with a marquee reception in the beautiful East Sussex countryside (Firle Cricket Ground). The fab photos today are by Brighton Photo, with words by our super-lovely new Love Sussex Weddings team member Shelley and beautiful Sussex bride Miriam of course….

When Brighton-lovers Matthew and Miriam got engaged (after 15 years together) they just had to get married in the scenic Sussex countryside, not far from Brighton’s sometimes-not-so-sunny-shores.

Their vintage themed day combined oh-so-pretty pastels and a sumptuously scrumptious Afternoon Tea for two themed reception, that the rain tried, but failed to ruin! Hoorah!

We caught up with beautiful bride, Miriam for all the cute and quirky details:

Love Sussex Weddings: Hello Miriam! Wow, what a wonderful wedding! So, why did you choose to get married in Sussex?

Miriam: We both moved to Brighton in our 20’s and absolutely love it here, to us it’s home and the surrounding countryside is just as beautiful, we couldn’t wait to show it off to friends and family from all over the UK.

Love Sussex Weddings: We don’t blame you! So, go on, spill the beans about your engagement.

Miriam: On our 15th anniversary, we went on a holiday to Tobago and stayed in a beach hut on a beautiful beach called Heavenly Bay. Matthew used my Grandmother’s ring, who is sadly no longer with us, which was a lovely touch. I spent the next few days snorkeling and gawking at it under water – I hadn’t thought we’d get engaged after so long together.

Love Sussex Weddings: Sounds worth the wait to us! So how did you start planning your dream day?

Miriam: After getting engaged, I had to almost immediately go away on a work trip to Spain. During this time I had a fair bit of down time and wi-fi access and planned almost all of it on my iphone!

I researched reviews, suppliers and décor and took screen grabs of anything that interested me and emailed people. Other than that, planning in the initial stages was over cocktails with friends (we heard Ménage a Trois in the Office bar in the Laines and booked them that night) and had lunches at Pelham House.

Love Sussex Weddings: Good old iphones, amazing that you can (and did) pretty much plan your whole wedding on one! So, what attracted you to your venue? It looks beautiful!

Miriam: We wanted a venue with a sense of occasion about it, whilst remaining a little quirky and Pelham House did just that. The beautiful terrace room looks out onto their gardens, with the Downs in the distance. We knew the gardens would be a stunning location to have bubbly after our ceremony too!

Love Sussex Weddings: You can’t say the word ‘stunning’ without mentioning your gorgeous flowing dress! Where did you find it?

Miriam: I bought it from White Leaf Bridal, Brighton and it was even designed in part by my Chief Bridesmaid Katharine. While I was there, I tried on my feather and pearl hair comb and just had to have it!

Love Sussex Weddings: You look amazing! So, how would you describe your pretty theme?

Miriam: I’d call it ‘Vintage Love.’ There was lots of soft sweetie pastel colours and also a nod to my beautiful engagement ring, as we chose sapphire to be the colour of choice for the bridesmaids’ dresses and Mathew’s tie.

Love Sussex Weddings: What a lovely idea! The sapphire colour looks amazing. Pastel is a perfect wedding choice too! We loved your cute invitations, tell us more about them!

Miriam: We are really lucky to have lots of creative friends like Barney, who created our gorgeous invitations of soft pastels, with bunting and an afternoon tea theme. He even managed to feature my two beloved horses  on the invitation and the ‘watering trough’ bar sign too! This completely set the tone and theme for the wedding! We then extended this look and feel into ‘Tea for Two’ menus, table plan and our signage for the marquee and surrounding area.

Love Sussex Weddings: Ooh lovely! More on the reception later! First, tell us about your last nights of freedom. What did you both get up to?

Miriam: Matthew went camping with lots of boys next to the river in Balcombe, Sussex and made fires and ate scotch eggs.

I had the most wonderful day;  my friends created an Enid Blyton style adventure for me, ‘the Secret Seventeen’. I was presented with a book and I had to find pages as clues. The first place I was taken to was the stable yard in Fulking where I kept my horses, which they had decorated to look amazing for a prosecco brunch. After a fun-filled afternoon, we then came back to Brighton for cocktails and Karaoke at Hotel Pelirocco and then onto The Funfair Club. It was basically a day of doing all of my favourite things!

Love Sussex Weddings: Sounds like a day you’ll never forget! With that in mind, what are your stand-out memories from your wedding ceremony?

Miriam: I got emotional standing waiting to go into the ceremony room, flanked by my parents – I wanted both of them to give me away – and feeling the weight of my eight best friends behind me. It was lovely. I’ll remember that forever!

To be continued. . .
