Torn between a swanky hotel wedding by the seaside and a rustic barn wedding in the country for your Sussex wedding? Well this lovely Brighton couple got the best of both worlds and held their wedding ceremony at the Grand Hotel in Brighton followed by a reception at Pangdean Barn.
Catherine and Duncan got married on the 7th of September 2012.
Their fab photos were taken by fantastic Brighton wedding photographer, Chris Giles.
Over to Catherine for more about their big day:
“Duncan proposed while we were on holiday in Southern India. We were staying in a bungalow overlooking the Holy Pamba River watching the most amazing thunder and lightning storm when he popped the question.
We chose to marry in Brighton not only because we live here but also because we love the relaxed atmosphere. We were both also brought up near the coast, so it was important that the seaside was near.
For my hen do I hired a cottage in Dorset and the hens organized a fun packed weekend including a sports day and afternoon tea. Duncan had his stag do in Edinburgh. He was born and spent the first six years of his life in Scotland so he was really eager to have his stag in his motherland!
When planning for the wedding I think I looked at nearly every wedding blog, they are such a great source of inspiration. We also got inspiration from our venues and Brighton of course.
The Grand Hotel has an old school feel to it and we wanted this to be reflected in the outfits especially the bridesmaids dresses.
I don’t think we really had a wedding theme as such however, we were both keen to make sure it was very relaxed and fun day for all.
Our wedding colours were big bold autumnal colours; reds, oranges and greens. I don’t really like pastel colours and I wanted a colour which would suit all my bridesmaids and make them look fab.
Also, I could not have organized our wedding without spreadsheets, it became quite an obsession!
Duncan organized a lego wedding cake which went down a treat. I think it was the main feature of our wedding. It was made by our wonderful friend Emily Grogan.
We had tolietries and sweets in the bathrooms and I made our wishing tree, which I was particularly proud of.
My pearl necklace was from the Brighton Lanes and my earrings were from Debenhams.
Pangdean was very laid back so we decided to have very relaxed and country style decorations (which we handmade).
We asked our florist (Miss Mole’s Flower Emporium) to order extra flowers from my wedding bouquet and the day before the wedding the bridesmaids and my family arranged the flowers in jam jars at Pangdean. I also made the wishing tree from some old branches that I found in the park, pebbles and a £1 flower pot from a car boot sale.
Our first dance was by Al Green ‘Let’s stay together’ and for our honeymoon we spent two weeks in Italy.
I really enjoyed organizing everything. I am bit of a logistics geek so I loved the planning side. I also enjoyed being really creative and making the decorations. I think Duncan enjoyed designing his Lego wedding cake!
I work in events planning and I love organizing events so in all honesty I loved planning it all. I think Duncan would say differently though.
If we could do it all again we would not change anything about the wedding day however, we would probably get married within a year (18 months is a long time to talk about weddings)!”

Thanks to Catherine and Duncan for sharing their beautiful big day with us and to Chris Giles for his gorgeous photos.
Love the bold colours they chose for this wedding and how fab do Catherine and her maids look in their dresses with all that fifties shizzle going on! The Irregular Choice shoes are all kinds of lush too, (Brighton is the hometown of Irregular Choice‘s creator too don’t you know!) And surely that must be one of the best lego wedding cakes ever made? Love it!
