The Terraces, A Relaxed Brighton-Inspired Beach Side Wedding

Rachael and Paul got married and held their wedding reception at The Terraces in Brighton earlier this summer.

Brighton Beach Wedding

We love everything about this Brighton beach side wedding: the relaxed sea-side vibe and the brilliant Brighton-inspired beachy wedding details.

The gorgeous photos today are by the lovely Erika from Photomadly. Here is what our beautiful Sussex bride, Rachel had to tell us about her Brighton-inspired day…

Love Sussex Weddings: Hi Rachael. Thanks so much for sharing your wedding with us! We absolutely love it! Let’s start with how you and Paul met, can you tell us a bit about that?

Wedding flowers Brighton

Rachael: We met at university when we were 20 years old, we broke up when university finished but got back in touch again through Facebook three years ago.

Love Sussex Weddings: Wow the wonders of Facebook eh? So why did you choose to get married in Brighton/Sussex?

Rachael: I have always lived in Sussex, I also lived in Brighton for a short while too. When Paul and I were first dating we enjoyed spending time on the beach and going on bike rides and walks on the Downs. Now we have our labrador Lolo we enjoy lots of dog walks along the seafront too.

Love Sussex Weddings: A Sussex lass then, and how did you find your wedding suppliers and venue?

Rachael We have had several meals at The Terraces and loved the views of the beach so decided it was the perfect location.

Terraces regular DJ Paul Budd was recommended to us by The Terraces so we contacted him and he was exactly what we wanted. He then recommended a wedding photographer, Erika at Photomadly. We met with Erika and saw her work and immediately wanted to snap her up for the occasion! My sister Lisa is a wedding stationery designer and also works for a local wedding design company Theme Works Weddings so she helped a lot with the venue decoration and all the stationery, she knew exactly what we wanted and created it perfectly!

Love Sussex Weddings: It looks amazing in the photos. So where did you find inspiration for your wedding and how would you describe your wedding theme?

Rachael: Our inspiration was simply Brighton as we love it! All our favourite locations came together to make our table names too: Brighton Pier, The West Pier, The Royal Pavilion, Brighton Bandstand, The Brighton Wheel, Hove Beach Huts, Brighton Beach and Brighton Marina.

I would describe our wedding theme as: Brighton, beachy, seaside and relaxed! Oh and our wedding colour was blue.

Love Sussex Weddings: What a great theme! Did you stay in Brighton the night before your wedding?

Rachael: Yes, myself and my bridesmaids stayed in the Alvia hotel which is in Kemp Town, very close to The Terraces the night before the wedding and got ready there on the morning of the wedding. The food and hospitality there was great and a lovely Jack Russel resides there!

Love Sussex Weddings: Fantastic. So, did you do anything non-traditional at your wedding?

Rachael: In between the wedding breakfast and evening party at The Terraces all the guests went to Brighton Pier to play games and have a go on the rides. We went on the carousel, whip, waltzers and even the bucking bronco, we also played a team game on the racing dolphins, we filled every seat! The pictures from these moments are some of our favourites.

Love Sussex Weddings: What fun! We love a bit of Dolphin Derby! OK so tell us about this amazing Hove beach hut wedding cake?

Rachael: A friend of mine from work made our cake. The top of the cake was an edible hove beach hut, with brown sugar for the sand, a little fondant Champagne bottle and glasses, and our dog Lola was digging in the sand. The cake was amazing. It was better than I could have ever imagined.

Love Sussex Weddings: And your gorgeous dress and outfit! Tell us all!

Rachael: My dress was from Debenhams, a copy of Pippa Middleton’s bridesmaid dress as seen in the Royal Wedding. My shoes were from Next.

I also wore a diamond necklace and earrings which were a pre-wedding present from my parents. My bracelet was a birthday present from my parents from many years before too. I wore a simple diamante hair band from Fross Wedding Collections in Uckfield and our rings were simple white gold bands.

I also had my flip flops, I don’t go out without them!

Brighton Beach Wedding

Love Sussex Weddings: You looked great. Who did your makeup and hair?

Rachael: Alfie at Headmasters Brighton did my hair, it looked just as I hoped it would I was very happy. We were running quite late and didn’t have much time. Alfie managed to make my hair look fantastic and add a cute little plait which I really wanted all in super quick time.

One of my bridesmaids did my make-up. I don’t usually wear any so I didn’t think a professional artist was necessary. I wanted to look very natural to go with the natural feel of the day.

Love Sussex Weddings: And Paul’s outfit?

Rachael: Suit and shirt both from Next.

Love Sussex Weddings: Lovely, and your bridesmaids and groomsmen’s outfits?

Rachael: Our bridesmaids wore a dress and shoes both from Coast . Our groomsmen wore matching slim line navy ties to match the colour of the bridesmaids dresses.

Love Sussex Weddings Love the colours you chose. How about your gorgeous flowers?

Rachael: Our flowers were from Gunns – they were perfect!

Love Sussex Weddings: Can you tell us about your wedding stationery and favours too?

Rachael: All our wedding stationery was done by my sister’s wedding stationery design company Lisa Loves Design. All elements of the stationery included an image of seagulls flying in the shape of a heart which really suited our style.

The stationery included invitations, table plan, table names, guests names, menus and favour labels.

Wedding Table Place Names / Table Plan

For our wedding favours we had Brighton rock with ‘Just Married’ written inside. The rock label was inkeeping with all stationery too.

Love Sussex Weddings: It all look great. How about your food?

Rachael: Our food was provided by The Terraces and was very tasty indeed! Fantastic service too, I would definitely recommend them as they know exactly how to handle weddings. We had an onsite event manager on the day who did a great job of making sure the day ran smoothly, and it did, without a hitch!

Love Sussex Weddings: And how about your wedding décor?

Brighton Beach Wedding

Rachael: The Terraces is well known as a bar and restaurant so it was important for us to make the venue look a little bit special and different for our big day. We achieved this through using draping entwined with fairy lights along with bay trees, lanterns and a giant vintage frame for the table plan. The ceiling and walls were draped with white voile, but the draper ensured it was still possible to see out of the windows as it was a beautiful blue day. Fairy lights were entwined within the ceiling draping to give it a really special magical feel. We also had a fairy light curtain behind the ceremony area and top table. Two bay trees were set at the front aisle which gave a classic look to the formal element of the day. As the sun set the drape lights really shone.

The décor was done by Theme Works.

Love Sussex Weddings: Sounds fab. And how about your honeymoon?

Rachael: We went to Crete. It’s a very pretty location full of adventure and relaxation. I had been there on a family holiday when I was 14, it was so lovely to visit the same spots again and see it from a new perspective.

Love Sussex Weddings: Crete is a lovely place. So what did you find the most difficult part of your wedding planning Rachael?

Rachael: Finding a good kennel for our labrador whilst away on honeymoon, had to be the right one!

Love Sussex Weddings: And finally, what did you enjoy most about planning your wedding?

Rachael: Doing it the way we wanted!
